Power Yoga is inspired from the ancient teaching of Hatha Yoga.It was introduced to the Western World in 1990’s by students of Sri K.Pattabhi Jois.
Beryl Bender Birch was the first person to use the word “Power Yoga”.She had traditional yoga background but modified it by combining yoga with strength training to make it more appealing to the Western World.
Although, Power Yoga is a modified version, it has elements of Bikram and Iyengar Yoga incorporated into it. Power Yoga is sometimes referred as Western version of Ashtanga Yoga and introduced yoga to the gym in America.
Described as a vigorous and fitness based exercise, it stretches each and every limb to the ultimate limit and at the same time maintaining a sense of inner peace.Breath are held longer to raise one’s physical endurance and refine one’s concentration. In a typical Power Yoga class, you would do one yoga asana followed by strength training. Ex : During sun salutation, one asana closely resembles the push-up position.
Power Yoga classes vary from one to another as it does not adhere to a set series of poses. It is recommended to practice Power Yoga 3 times weekly for about 45 minutes. Among the benefits of Power Yoga are:
- improve calorie burning
- stretches and tones muscles
- improve blood circulation
- increase core strength
- enhance concentration
- release tension and anxiety
- relax the body
Since this is a muscle building vigorous workout, it is suitable for those who are already fit and want a minimal amount of chanting and meditation with their yoga. However, these days there are Power Yoga classes catered for Beginner, Intermediate and Advance Level, so anyone can do it. Power Yoga still focus on the general aim of classical yoga which is to unite the body, mind and spirit.
