hatha yogaHatha Yoga was introduced by Swami Swatmarama in the 15th century in India.Hatha in Sanskrit means Ha for sun and Tha for moon translated as the yoga that brings union “of the pair of opposites” referring to the positive (sun) and negative (moon) or the masculine and female energies within each individual.

Traditional Hatha Yoga places great emphasis on purifying and conditioning the body and mind through asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation.The objective is for an individual to master the physical body and to achieve balance and harmony between body and mind.

Hatha Yoga is the most popular, well known and frequently practiced style of yoga from which other main styles of yoga originated.Each of this new style is generally named after the individual who first introduced it, such as Sivananda, Iyengar, Bikram and etc.

Popularity of Hatha Yoga exploded in the West during the late sixties.The Hatha Yoga predominantly practiced in the West consist of mostly asanas as it has proven to be an effective way to combine exercise with relaxation techniques to develop strength, flexibility, stamina, concentration and relaxation.

Hatha Yoga classes is the best place for a beginner to learn basic yoga poses and breathing techniques.It is usually a slow paced stretching class with simple breathing exercise.Due to various styles of Yoga available these days, it is important for you to understand the differences in the style of yoga to choose one that is right for you.
