About Bikram

Bikram Choudhury is an internationally acclaimed Hatha Yoga master for more than 30 years.Bikram was born in 1946 in Calcutta, India.He started yoga at the age of four with his guru, Bishnu Ghosh and practiced yoga for 6 hours a day at Bishnu Ghosh College of Physical Education in Calcutta.When he was twelve years old, he became the youngest National Yoga Champion of India and held the title for three consecutive years.

From 1970-1972, he did a research with medical experts at Tokyo University to prove scientifically that Hatha Yoga asanas help in the prevention of degenerative and chronic ailments. In 1972, he received an invitation from the American Medical Association and came to United States. President Nixon was his first student.He quickly became the foremost yoga teacher in the West and his students include celebrities and athletes.

Bikram is the founder of the Yoga College of India in Beverly Hills in 1974and has since set up hundreds of Bikram Yoga studios around the world.

About Bikram Yoga

Scientifically and methodically formulated and introduced by Bikram Choudhury, this yoga is also referred as “Hot Yoga” and ideally practiced in a heated room with a temperature of 105 degrees fahrenheit .The warm environment acts as a tool to warm, strengthen, stretch and tone every muscle, ligament and tendon of the body which allows the body to stretch more easily and deeply into the pose.At the same time, it also enhances flexibility, move fresh oxygenated blood to 100% of your body and deepens one’s awareness of breath.

Bikram Yoga is a physically challenging, energizing and intense yoga style that produce profuse sweat to cleanse the toxins by activating the sweat glands.Bikram Yoga focus on a series of 26 asanas and 2 breathing techniques.Each posture is performed twice in a single 90 minutes class and held for certain period of time.

A typical Bikram Yoga session begin with warming up breathing exercise followed by 24 asanas which consist of Standing, Backbends, Forward Bends, Twist and lastly accompanied by the Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati Breath) which works the entire body and helps to promote strength, balance, focus, flexibility as well as cultivate a connection between mind and body.

This non-impact yoga is suitable for all levels and ages as it minimizes injury and muscle strain.Bikram Yoga classes are conducted by certified instructors who give precise instructions during class, explain the poses in an easy, understandable and informative manner while motivating, support and inspire you to achieve your fitness goal.Consistent practice can also help you to develop muscles and lose weight gradually.Scientific evidence has shown that practice of Hot Yoga can regenerate tissues and cure chronic ailments.

However, during the practice of Hot Yoga, it is essential to bring your own yogamat and towel since you will be sweating a lot.It is recommended to drink plenty of water before and after class to prevent dehydration. Please note that this yoga is not suitable for pregnant women.
